Teaching and Learning
Windang Public School prides itself on delivering a knowledge rich curriculum that is grounded in high expectations and evidence-based practices. Through rigorous professional development, we understand the important role that teachers have in knowing their content and how to teach it. We prioritise making learning visible, enabling students to know what they are learning, why they are learning it and what success looks like.
We are committed to delivering teaching and learning experiences using the Anita Archer and Charles Hughes's Explicit Instruction Model. The focus is on delivering systematic, direct, engaging and success-oriented lessons that promote achievement for all students. The logical sequencing of content assists teachers in breaking down complex skills into manageable steps for students. Teachers engage students in a combination of modelled, guided and independent lessons. They supply regular, meaningful feedback that moves learning forward and allows each individual to achieve high levels of success.
Morning Routine
The Morning Routine is a daily lesson structure aimed at developing routines and learning habits across the whole school. The lessons are taught at the beginning of the school day for 30 minutes and focus on front end loading students with the knowledge and skills they will require to be successful in their learning throughout the day.
The Morning Routine is broken into four quadrants: Day, Date and Weather, Talk for Learning, Sentence of the Day and 100 Days of Learning. Students learn speaking and listening skills, enhanced vocabulary, academic background knowledge and schema, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and number facts. All quadrants are taught using explicit instruction and incorporate high quality modelling, repetitive retrieval practise and immediate feedback. The worked examples expose students to high expectations, step-by-step demonstrations and regular checks for understanding. The focus of the lessons is to teach learning to mastery.
